When parents divorce, the divorce decree must establish plans for child custody, visitation/access and child support. The Court may have concern about the living conditions in which the children will be placed. If so, the Court may order that a Home Study be conducted.
The Home Study provides the judge with a detailed description of the homes and immediate surroundings in which children will reside. The neighborhood, including street access to the home is described in terms of general condition and risk to children. The condition of the exterior of the home and surrounding yard/play area is described. The home itself is described including safety features such as child proof safety locks and fire alarms. Risks to children are identified and the parents have an opportunity to correct deficiencies. Finally the general nature of and conditions of foods stuffs are described.
The Home Study is NOT judgmental, and is purely a descriptive process. The description provides the judge relevant information on which to base any decisions he/she may have to make concerning living arrangements for the children.
