There are instances when a parent has never been or not recently been involved with a child from a former spouse or significant other. In such instances it is extremely difficult, especially for young children, to thrust the parent into the child’s life. The process of Therapeutic Parent-Child Reunification is a structured one that brings the parent into the child’s life and environment in a paced, methodical manner. The pace is appropriate to the child’s age, development and comfort level. The method is designed to slowly build a trusting relationship between parent, child and existing parent or other caregivers. The reuniting parent should recognize that the child must grow comfortable and not grow discouraged with the pace. The reuniting parent must also be committed to the development of the relationship, and not disappoint the child by disengaging.
